6 Organic Valentine’s Treats To LOVE

6 Organic Valentine’s Treats To LOVE

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner which means it’s once again another opportunity to purchase candy. Chocolate is the prized choice of candy during this lovely holiday to celebrate love, but there are also numerous candy manufacturers that produce confections with artificial sweeteners, colorings,

Whole Foods Altamonte Springs

Whole Foods Altamonte Springs

America’s healthiest grocery store Whole Foods Market unveils their 25th Florida location in the heart of Altamonte Springs. First, and foremost, I love the use of reclaimed wood in numerous parts of the store. Nature’s beauty is definitely on display at the 40,000 square-foot store. As I walked through on the right I spotted the beautifully designed juice bar. The 21st century struck me when I saw the juice bar menu on a flat-screen display. What a great idea for customers that are waiting in line or browsing to view what’s offered. Paper menus are the past and printing costs are high. Digital displays are energy efficient and what’s hip today. There is so much to explore at WFM Altamonte Springs. Grand opening will be tomorrow(1/20/16) at 9 am. The first 500 in line will receive a mystery gift.

WFM has the most organic veggies and fruit selection I have seen yet. I really love that WFM tries to get in local produce whenever possible. They are always looking after the community.

WFM has the absolute best meat department on the planet. The meat case is always like a work of art. Although I must say this the first time I have discovered a grocery store with a dry aged beef case. Pretty fancy!

I really love the vintage elements of the bakery department. Good to know the bakery uses traceable cage-free eggs, unbleached & unbromated flours, creams & butters from rBGH-FREE cows, and plant-based colorings on cakes & cupcakes. No question about the quality here. Best of the best.

Why America Needs A Sugar Tax.

Why America Needs A Sugar Tax.

There is no debating about whether America has a problem with diabetes & heart disease. Now, whether sugar is the cause for such high rates of these particular health problems is questionable. The topic of having a sugar tax seems to be picking up steam, but no one likes the term tax, especially when the term is a clear indication of government involvement.

Normally I wouldn’t support yet another tax, but I do think by implementing a sugar tax consumers will think twice about purchasing such vast amounts of sugary drinks. I’ve worked in the supermarket industry for years and still today I’m blown away how often and how many people consume not just soda, but juices that are marketed as healthy with 40 grams of sugar or more.

Some consumers go as far as pairing a sugary drink with a doughnut every morning adding more grams of sugar per day. I start to ask myself just where does this cycle stop, and at what point did we become like zombies, that seem to be nearly on a sugar-ONLY diet.

Unfortunately, there is no current bar or regulation stating the recommended daily amount of sugar one should consume. Public health organizations like the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association both seem to agree that “added sugars” is what we should limit and consume more of naturally occurring sugars that are found in foods such as fruit and milk. Sugary drinks are not the only root cause of consumers gathering piles & piles of sugar daily. There are so many sugary products on the market such as cakes, cookies, ice cream, candy, and the list can go on and one. I’m not in any way implying don’t consume any of these foods at all but just monitor intake of added sugars.

I know some will look at the “Sugar Tax” as some sort of punishment, but that is not the intention of this surcharge. We have a major problem in our society that needs to be settled. I don’t want to see my generation or any generation dying so young, because of something we can fix by educating our society about health & nutrition.

Day 4 of #31DaysofCleanLiving I’m feeling great so far, as we all keep celebrating and working towards our goals to stay healthy. Today, I have to share with you another favorite book I love. The month of January is also known as juice or detox season. Don’t be surprised if the first thing you see walking into a housewares store is juicers and blenders. Everyone wants to detox and start off the new year with a clean slate.

New York Times best-selling author Kris Carr released a new book last year called Crazy Sexy Juice. The book has over 100 juice, smoothie, and nut milk recipes to get you on the right path. Lactose-intolerant? No problem, there are no recipes in this book that require dairy products to be present. There are so many juice & smoothie books on the market, but most seem to have recipes that contain some type of diary product either for a creamy consistency or just for a rich taste. I’m happy that Crazy Sexy Juice is a book I can depend on without feeling left out of the game. I am a team player when it comes down to living a healthy lifestyle. The wellness activist has been a big role model in my life from the moment I watched her documentary “Crazy Sexy Cancer” that aired a few years ago on OWN(Oprah Winfrey Network). Carr is living proof that even with cancer you can live strong by consuming nutrient rich plant based foods.

I recommend this book for people that are seriously wanting to take their health to the next level by juicing and blending.  You will learn more than just how to juice and blend to make the perfect health-conscious drinks. There is information on which juicers are the best for your needs and budget. Don’t know what pH balanced stands for and how important it is for overall health? You can immerse yourself in all of this great information and more in Crazy Sexy Juice. Let me know what you decide to try.
